Nepali students applying to universities need IELTS Academic, not General Training. Here is the full difference, who needs which, and how to book at a discount.

Which IELTS test do Nepali students need?
If you are a Nepali student planning to study at a university in Australia or the UK, you need IELTS Academic. This is the version universities ask for when they admit you to a degree. IELTS General Training is designed for people migrating for work or applying for non-degree training, and university admissions offices generally ask for Academic instead. The visa English rules are a separate question, covered below.
This single distinction causes more wasted money in Nepal than almost any other booking mistake. Students sometimes book General Training because a friend mentioned it or because a booking page was unclear, then discover their score cannot be used for their university offer. There are no refunds for booking the wrong module, so getting this right before you pay matters.
What is the difference between IELTS Academic and General Training?
Both versions of the test are scored on the same 9-band scale, take 2 hours and 45 minutes, and are recognised under the same IELTS brand run by the British Council, IDP, and Cambridge. The Listening and Speaking sections are exactly the same in both modules. The difference is in Reading and Writing.
The Academic Reading section uses long passages drawn from books, journals, and academic-style articles, the kind of dense text you encounter in university study. The General Training Reading section uses shorter, more everyday material such as advertisements, notices, and workplace documents.
The Writing difference is the one students notice most. In Academic Writing Task 1, you describe and interpret a chart, graph, table, or diagram in your own words. In General Training Task 1, you write a letter, for example a letter to a landlord or an employer. Task 2 is an essay in both versions, but the Academic essay topics tend to be more abstract and analytical.
Who needs IELTS General Training?
General Training is the right choice in a narrow set of cases that mostly do not apply to university-bound students. It is used for skilled migration visas to Australia, Canada, and the UK, for some secondary education enrolment, and for work-related training programmes. If your goal is a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD at a university, General Training is not what you need.
There is one grey area worth knowing. A small number of foundation, pathway, or diploma programmes occasionally accept General Training. This is the exception, not the rule. If you are looking at a pathway course, confirm the exact module in writing with the institution before booking. When in doubt, choose Academic, because Academic is accepted everywhere General Training is accepted for study, plus far more.
Does the UKVI version matter for Nepali students?
It can, and this is a second point students miss. For a UK Student visa, GOV.UK asks for English at CEFR B2 for degree-level study and CEFR B1 below degree level. For degree-level study, your university (a Higher Education Provider) can assess your English itself, at a level equivalent to CEFR B2. If your university asks you for a Secure English Language Test (SELT) instead, the IELTS tests on the UK-approved list outside the UK are IELTS for UKVI and IELTS Life Skills, not standard IELTS Academic.
The practical advice for Nepali students applying to the UK: check your university's offer letter and CAS guidance carefully, and ask whether the university assesses your English itself or requires IELTS for UKVI specifically. For Australia, the Home Affairs subclass 500 page lists IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training as approved tests, with the same minimum score of 6.0, and your university sets its own admission requirement on top.
How much does IELTS Academic cost in Nepal in 2026?

Typing or Writing on Paper: how to choose
IDP has announced that paper-based IELTS is no longer offered in Nepal after 27 June 2026, so the choice now is how you answer the Writing section. On IELTS on Computer you type it. With the Writing on Paper option: Listening and Reading are on computer, Writing is handwritten on paper, and Speaking is face to face with an examiner. Neither affects which universities accept your score. Type if you are quick and accurate on a keyboard; choose Writing on Paper if you write better by hand.
